Özet

In this study, the focus is on the experiences of mothers with children with special needs, the difficulties experienced by these mothers, support needs, and social reactions. The research was designed using a qualitative method and was conducted using more than one qualitative research design. In particular, phenomenological design and case study designs were applied in terms of the support received by mothers with children with special needs from spouses, the environment, and institutions, recognizing disability, and noticing risk symptoms. The study group consisted of 70 participant mothers with children with special needs living in Hakkari province. In the data collection process, a semi-structured interview form was used to collect demographic information and data related to the research questions. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and content analysis methods, which are important steps in qualitative research. The study revealed that mothers are in great need of social and psychological support and that these supports are insufficient. It was also determined that mothers and health professionals play critical roles in identifying children with special needs early. Still, there are also cases where necessary interventions are not made on time. Societal reactions are often negative, and children with special needs and their families often face exclusion and a lack of understanding. In addition, mothers' sacrifice towards their children with special needs and their efforts for the needs of their children were characterized as “angel mothers”.
