Abstract

The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of Nd 0.2Gd0.8Mn2Ge2 compound were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The sample was prepared by arc-melting. The compound crystallizes in the tetragonal ThCr 2Si2-type structure with a I4mmm space group. Re-entrant ferrimagnetism is observed for the sample. The compensation point has been observed at 82 K. The maximum magnetic entropy change |ΔSmax| of Nd 0.8Gd0.2Mn2Ge2 is 0.812 J kg -1 K-1 for a field change of 01 T. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
